How do primary students become captivating speakers? Oracy development is the answer. LIMITED
Saturday January 25, 2025 9:15am - 10:15am GMT+07
"Description of content:

Oracy Development for Children and Young Adults

Being a confident communicator and a strong team player are important qualities. There is a saying that says that two heads are better than one. The intelligence of humans is particularly communal, and language has allowed the students to have collective thinking, and it means thinking together (Cambridge, 2019).
Students should learn both to talk and through talk in order to improve their subject knowledge and understanding through classroom talk which has been planned, designed, and supported to allow students to learn skills needed to talk effectively. Oracy can be used across many different subjects to increase student achievement and outcomes (Simon, 2019).
For example, Oracy in science classrooms is important for helping students learn to clarify and explain their ideas which is a critical part of science communication. In addition, Oracy is important for math achievement because students must learn to rationalize their conclusion and communicate and respond to the arguments of others. There is evidence indicating that there is a strong connection between participating in math conversations and improved math achievement (Simon, 2019).
The purpose of this presentation will inform you about the knowledge and understanding of Oracy, how significant it is for Cambodian students and teachers to obtain and encourage Oracy skills and how do teachers develop Oracy in the classroom.

Workshop style:
The workshop style is constructivist. Participants involve in this workshop will be asked to generate their own answers through given questions and group interactions.

Intended audience:
Cambodian English teachers who wish to find innovative ways to improve their students Oracy skills, English team leaders or head teachers.

" The respective participants could define what is Oracy and its benefits, differentiate between learning to talk and learning through talk, and develop Oracy skills in the classroom.

Developing Strength-Based Success Plans: From Seed Packets to Success. Empowering Learners to Thrive FULL
Saturday January 25, 2025 10:30am - 11:30am GMT+07
In this presentation, we will explore our transition from Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs) to Student Success Plans (SSPs) by starting to actively involve students in their goal-setting processes. Inspired by Shelley Moore’s concept of learning plans as seed packets, we aim to help both children—and flowers—bloom. We are moving away from deficit models to empower students in shaping their educational journeys.

Engagement is a fundamental component of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and fostering expert learners is essential to this approach. I will share actionable strategies that schools can implement to develop and enhance strength-based success plans. By emphasizing individual strengths rather than deficits, we can create personalized pathways toward goals, promoting a more inclusive educational system that fosters a genuine sense of belonging for all students. Ultimately, we aim to cultivate expert learners who can guide and drive their own learning journeys.

The workshop will be informative and interactive, looking at various ways educators can plan goals and incorporate student voice in these success plans. "

Learning outcomes
1. Shift in perspective: Participants will understand how to transition from a deficit mindset—focusing on ""fixing"" students to meet ""grade level expectations""—to a growth-oriented approach that emphasizes nurturing individual strengths and potential, fostering an environment where every student can thrive.

2. Creating expert learners: Attendees will understand the importance of cultivating expert learners who take ownership of their learning journeys, encouraging self-directed goal setting and personal accountability.

3. Individualized Support: Participants will develop a commitment to meeting students where they are, recognizing unique starting points and crafting personalized pathways that nudge them 1% closer to their goals each day.

Raptors, Middle Schoolers, and the Science of Behavior: Making the Right Choices Easy and the Wrong Choices Hard FILLING
Saturday January 25, 2025 10:30am - 11:30am GMT+07
We will host a workshop that explores practical classroom management strategies grounded in the science of behavior. We will examine the ABCs of behavior and how they relate to the classroom environment. We will explore how behavior never happens in a vacuum; it always serves a function and is shaped by its surroundings. By considering the function of behavior, and the environmental contexts in which it occurs, we can uncover insights into why certain problem behaviors arise. With these insights, we can adapt our responses to create more positive outcomes in the classroom. This perspective allows us to develop creative solutions that make positive choices easier for students and negative choices hard. The goal of the workshop will be to support teachers in their efforts to foster classrooms where students feel empowered, valued, and engaged in their learning.

Learning outcomes
1.) Build a foundational understanding of how behavior functions within its environmental context.

2.) Use this understanding to provide insight into potential causes of challenging behaviors.

3.) Brainstorm effective and practical strategies that set students up for success by making the right choices easy and the wrong choices hard.

Using storytelling to enhance movement competency in the early years. FILLING
Saturday January 25, 2025 10:30am - 11:30am GMT+07
"Using storytelling to enhance movement skills in Early Years:

Why:
1. There is evidence to show that combining movement and academic activities (i.e., storytelling) results in superior motor development and language ability compared with movement or storytelling alone. This is considered an embodied cognitive approach.

3. Storytelling in the early years boosts memory, fosters imaginative, creative thinking and cognitive skills as well as develop cultural and moral understanding

How:
We will discuss different ways of incorporating storytelling in PE, such as story books, inventive stories as well as student generated stories.

What:
We will discuss a list of storybooks that incorporates movement easily in a PE lesson.
" The workshop will generate ideas for incorporating story telling and movement for early years teachers.

Accents and Assumptions: How does the language we use shape unconscious language attitudes and conscious stereotypes? FULL
Saturday January 25, 2025 1:45pm - 2:45pm GMT+07
"Abstract: A vast body of research on language attitudes has shown that speech style, vocabulary, and a speaker's accent play an important role in the social evaluation of the speaker. Using standard or non-standard language directly influences how others perceive us on at least two dimensions: status or superiority (e.g., intelligent, educated) and solidarity or attractiveness (e.g., friendly, pleasant). This cognitive process is often automatic and unconscious, based on learned stereotypes. Hint: Think of the bad guys' accents in movies. Fight your own cognitive biases by understanding this phenomenon!

Workshop style: Presentation with small tasks

Intended audience: Everyone interested in the relationship between stereotypes, language, and belonging; a belonging-inspired workshop with a strong scientific background

Disclaimer: Some stereotypes will be shown and discussed, come open-minded!"

Learning outcomes
- Increasing awareness of broad and personal language attitudes that influence our perception of other people
- Reflecting on stereotypes we (accidentally) learned
- Learning about language accommodation in the international environment - ""moving"" our own language toward others (e.g. choosing vocabulary depending on the public)"

Using storytelling to enhance movement competency in the early years. LIMITED
Saturday January 25, 2025 1:45pm - 2:45pm GMT+07
"Using storytelling to enhance movement skills in Early Years:

Why:
1. There is evidence to show that combining movement and academic activities (i.e., storytelling) results in superior motor development and language ability compared with movement or storytelling alone. This is considered an embodied cognitive approach.
2. Storytelling is an innovative and arts-integrated pedagogy to foster knowledge and skills through creativity, engagement, confidence and motivation
